We use it inside a duvet cover and with flannel sheets and honestly it is incredibly warm. The one we received was very well made, good baffle boxes sewn all the way around and through to keep filling in place, edges very sturdy with roping, it looks like it will hold up very well. We have used it about a week now and it is not very heavy but we find it to be plenty warm. It covers our standard king (not california) quite well but does not hang over the sides much. All in all, we are really happy with this purchase.
